Feeding the birds in winter

Our unit of inquiry has got us thinking about winter and how hard it is for some animals to survive in the winter. We have found our about how some small mammals, like hedgehogs hibernate to survive the winter. Birds do not hibernate. Through the cold weather they have to find food and stay warm. There is less food for the birds in winter because most trees are not growing fruits or seeds at this time of year.

So we decided to make some seed balls for the birds. We found some pinecones and tied a piece of string to the top. We covered the pinecone with fat - pushing it into the holes. Then we sprinkled over the seeds and nuts and they stuck onto the fat. We hung the finished seed cones onto the trees in the playground for the birds to snack on.
