Cuisenaire rod play and exploration

Today we took out the cuisenaire rods for the first time. LR noticed that they are different colours and then want on to make a road. MG discovered that you can make the shape of letters. Some children balanced them and found out that they are wobble and not very stable. It can be frustrating. AV balanced a pair of rods to make a slope. Some children sorted by colour. Some worked alone and others paired up and talked about what they were doing. One table made lots of star shapes and patterns that they called 'tapis' or 'carpets'.
